Building a High School Credit - Art
Sample Fine, Visual, and Performing Arts Credit
In order to apply for 1.0 credit, students must document at least 180 hours of study including the required components listed below (.5 credits = 90 hours). The course of study should focus on a particular form of art, such as: drawing, painting, graphics arts, ceramics, photography, music, theatre, dance, art history, etc. It is possible to integrate different art forms, but there should be an emphasis on one overall theme.
Goals
The following goals are aligned with Washington State EALRs. Refer to benchmark 3 (high-school standards) when writing your individual goals for the credit contract.
- The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to the arts. The following examples are ways in which students can accomplish this goal.
- Classroom instructions, discussions, etc.
- Reading about art techniques, artists and their styles, art in history, etc.
- Visit galleries, museums, theatres, symphonies, etc.
- Required – 3 minimum – all art credits 1.0
- Required – 1 minimum – all art credits .5
- The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems. The following examples are ways in which students can accomplish this goal.
- Sketchbook full of varying sketches.
- Create artistic compositions using art elements (see below)
- Performance in a play (acting/dancing)
- Keep a log of practices and performances which includes time
- Performance with a musical instrument (solo/group)
- Keep a log of practices and performances which includes time
- Evaluate (both the student’s own art and other artists) artworks through written responses using visual arts, music, drama, and dance
- Required - 8 minimum – all art credits 1.0
- Required – 4 minimum – all art credits .5
- The student uses at least one of the art forms (visual arts, music, drama and/or dance) to communicate ideas and feelings. The following examples are ways in which students can accomplish this goal.
- Multi-media presentation
- Required (culminating project) all art credits 1.0 and .5
- Computer-generated presentation (PowerPoint, video, e-portfolio, etc.)
- Display using variety of media to present project
- Create artistic compositions to express personal feelings, moods, expressions, etc.
- The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work. The following examples are ways in which students can accomplish this goal.
- Integrate arts knowledge and skills into other areas of study.
- Present artwork in such a way that others can learn and/or benefit from your acquired knowledge.
- Provide instruction to others
- Create web page
- PowerPoint presentation
- Display personal portfolio
- Write an essay (research-based, creative, narrative, expository, etc) that demonstrates the influence of the arts in shaping and reflecting cultures and history.
