Building a High School Credit - ASL

Sample American Sign Language (ASL)

Students seeking high school credit for American Sign Language (ASL) are required to build a portfolio which clearly documents their progress towards and successful completion of all five language goals as outlined by the National Standards for Foreign Language Learningcommunication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities.

*This Competency Profile Sheet checklist is designed for students enrolled in ASL courses at EHRC.  Check each element that the student is able to demonstrate both receptively and expressively at a "Novice-High Level" on the ACTFL guidelines OR the "Mid ASL" scale on the TASC-ASL.

Communication
            * Goals are met by successfully completing course requirements (see course syllabus).
            * No additional study is required.
Culture
            * ASL courses do not provide in-depth study.
            * Homeschool study is required.
Connections
            * ASL courses provides some study in this area.
            * Supplemental homeschool study is required.
Comparisons
            * Goals are met by successfully completing course requirements (see course syllabus).
            * No additional study is required.
Communities
            * ASL courses do not provide in-depth study.
            * Homeschool study is required.

Time Management/Guidelines

            * ASL classes meet 2 days per week for 55 minutes each day.
            * Expect average 2 hours of assigned homework each week for the ASL course
            * Budget approx. 1-2 hours additional time per week for independent homeschool studies

High School Credit Proposal/Contract

            * Using the appropriate ASL course syllabus, input course goals, campus activities,
              homeschool activities, resources, & progress indicators provided by your ASL Instructor

            * Using the Seattle Central Community College/American Sign Language Articulation
              Agreement Competency Profile Sheet, to fulfill the required homeschool components.
                        * For ASL 101 goals, refer to the Competency Profile Sheet - ASL 101
                        * For ASL 102 goals, refer to the Competency Profile Sheet - ASL 102
                        * For ASL 103 goals, refer to the Competency Profile Sheet - ASL 103

Required Portfolio Components

            * Homework Assignments from ASL course
            * Unit / Lesson Quizzes from ASL course
            * Final Exams from ASL course
            * Progress Reports from the ASL Instructor
            * Records of activities from homeschool studies
            * Final Reflection Videotape (provided by the student)
            * Final Evaluation (written by the parent - based primarily on homeschool studies)
