HIGHLIGHTS of 12/16: - library discussion - playground update - guest speaker Jan 7th noon library - January sleeping bag and coat drive
Leadership Council Meeting – Wednesday, December 16, 2009 Regular Meeting EHRC Library Classroom 1 Present: Tammy, Danny, Amy, Kate S, Trish, Cindy, Cheryl Absent: Diane, Jan, Rebecca, Kate G. Community: Cindy Wills
Minutes: No quorum.
Community Input:
Cindy Wills brought a concern to LC about books that have been taken out of the library and put in the commons as “free.” The books are hard cover and have been part of the honor system part of the library.
What is the process of purging books from the library and how do we involve the community?
- Let’s keep what parents are using.
- Parents do use the older materials.
- She also suggested that we have various types of curriculum fairs e.g. subject focused, things people have discovered…some way to highlight resources we already have.
- Parents would also like to have more learning games.
- Another concern is that the books geared to visual learners have been assimilated into the rest of the library which makes it harder for parents to find.
Discussion: There are some schools that still use the Basal readers especially for students who struggle with reading. There are many pros and cons to Basal readers. Some concerns are that the historical information is incorrect and that the vocabulary is not always consistent. What we do have in the library is level readers but they don’t have some components that are in the Basal Readers. Can we have parents be part of choosing new library materials? The committee would need to consist of the library staff, parents, and teachers. Danny will begin working toward a library committee.
NEW BUSINESS: Supplemental Funds Request: MOTION: To purchase the rest of the Usborn series that we have a few of. These are hardcover library bound books. Trish moved, Cheryl seconded. No quorum – vote will be done by email.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Danny looked into us getting a playground. Schools do not use general funds to purchase playground equipment. They typically raise monies and then getting matching funds from various sources. There are still plans to improve the playfields in conjunction with City of Edmonds, which could possibly include a playground. Down the road there is a possibility of Lynndale Elementary being housed here while their school is built and the district would need to put in a playground.
Kate Smith – Guest Speaker coming. Thursday, January 7th at 12:00 – 1:00pm
Amy Barnes- There will be a sleeping bag and coat drive in January.
Respectfully submitted by Tammy Jacobsen.
